Tranny Rebuild Costs
My 72 convert is still leaking. The previous owner replaced the rear seal. I just had someone try to seal everything else without pulling the tranny. Still leaking and told its the seal at the pump now.
Local transmission shop recommended by a few different people said it would be $650 to replace the front seal but he would not reccomend. He said I really should do a rebuild at about $1400 depending on parts.
Is this reasonable?

Unless this guy offers an awsome warranty I would find someplace else to rebuild your transmission.

Onething I noticed when checking around for prices(my front pump seal is leaking).
$1200-1500 if I take the car to them they pull, rebuild and replace trans. If I take trans to them and all they do is rebuild $350-500. When the time comes I will try and pull and replace myself.
Larry
PS Go ahead and rebuild because if you don't you will have to in 6months. The trans has to come out either way and if you rebuild you won't have to worry about it(hopefully).

I just got me TH350 rebuilt for $500.00 out the door. That is a total rebuild including a rebuilt torque converter. It has a 3year unlimited mileage warranty included. The tranny was out of the car and I took it to him.

I pd $900 back in 2008 for a complete rebuild, shift kit and new torque converter. (TH350) Drove the car in and picked it up when complete. He rebuilt it with stronger parts I told him I like to do smoke shows and beat the crap out of it. I could have bought one from Summit for a little less but, I have to install it, and if it breaks, I have to remove it, pack it, ship it and wait for word that they may fix it under warranty. This guy is local, easier to deal with if I have an issue, but I have not had an issue works great and I do lots of smoke show and beat the crap out of it

A front pump seal is not a big deal. Drop the transmission, pull the converter off, pop out the old seal, install a new one, put the converter back on and put it back in the car. If the transmission is working good and you have some idea of the miles on it, I would replace the seal. Shop for pricing. I would thing $250-$300 to replace the seal. Rebuild should be $600-$750 but I have not priced one lately.

What did you end up doing? I am having the same trouble with a recently rebuilt 200r4. Was told if the tranny is in the car, it can be tested for internal problems. Once removed as I have done, I was told not to just replace the front seal because you need to determine why the seal started to leak to prevent the problem from happening again. The biggest possiblility is the bushing in the pump may be damaged and caused the seal to blow out.

Hey 71 Cutlass. I know there are lots of good shops in the DFW area but I would never use anybody but Plano Transmission. Jeff is the guy that runs the place and is the most honest person I have ever dealt with in the car repair business. Years ago when I didn't have two nickels to rub together, I had a 1990 Lumina that just started pouring transmission fluid. I took it to Jeff and he had quoted me something like $260 to fix it. He called in about an hour and said your car is ready. The bolts on the torque converter cover were loose. They tightend them and added fluid and would not take a dime. I am a lifetime customer and have sent him several customers over the years.

redoldsman,
Jeff McLeod is his name and that is exactly who I am talking about. Like you, I believe he is one of the nicest, most honest people alive on this planet. Many from the NTOC (our local club) use his shop.

The tranny shop I took my turbo 400 to... Removed my tranny, replaced all the seals (6 or 7) and reinstalled it for $660.00 CDN. I told them not to open it up because it worked fine. The owner said his guys put in 7 1/2 hours on it. He charged me 6 hours labor, plus parts, plus taxes. I don't know if that's a good price or not. I had no idea of the cost before hand. (I was hoping for about $350.00)
The thing doesn't leak anymore and it still works great.

How much did you end up paying for your tranny rebuild?
As a reference point, my friend rebuilds and reseals transmissions and he told me $350 for a reseal and $600 for a T350 rebuild with quality parts, lifetime warranty, etc made to handle 350-400hp.
