TH400 Gear Noise from transmission sound (video)

hey
few weeks ago when it startet to beeing cold i have a strange noise from the transmission (engine) as you can hear in the 2 videos it sounds like 2 gears running bad.

also then its cold it takes 5 sec between a gearchange in N to R or N to D

1. noise is louder when engine cold.
2. when warm sound nearly dissapear

in Video 1 you can hear it in N (loud) after switching to D it dissapears nearly and while driging faster it comes again

seems like it hast something to do with the input shaft of the transmission.
first i thought of flywheel and starter gear that seem the origin of the sound while try to hear and identify it.

(N then switch to D )

(while driving with 20 mph)

any thoughts ?

My first impression when viewing the video, it might be your speedometer cable.

I have experienced gear whine with my th400 as well. In the same way you describe it, when it gets cold.

Lets see what the other guys think.

I dont think that it can be thecable because the Noise is proportional with The engine rpm not the vehicle Speed ...

It sunds like the pump or gears that drive the pump. Pump could be struggling to make pressure. Is it low on fluid? When was the last time it had a filter change?

hey Eric
thanks for your thoughts, i checked oil level in P while engine running and warm -> OK and clear.
i dunno when filter was changed the last time think more than 5 years ago.
if the filter blocks the oil this also can occur the bad shifting when cold...

i have oil and a filter set in tha garage bought a month ago i ll chenge both and keep u posted...

Does anyone know how much should be filled in when empty ? TH400 6 quarts ? right ?

Its hard to tell what you had going on in the pan as you wiped it. Normally there would be piles of clutch material and other stuff under the filter. Does it shift ok now? Glad it worked out, you may be close to an overhaul in the future, so save your money.

I've been told a spoon full of material is normal. Probably read it in a car magizinge. but what kind of spoon? how big?

Like Eric said, you'll probably be fine for now but things could get worse. Its hard to tell .
