Th200c Speedo gear

I have an ‘84 Delta 88 Royale Brougham. I’m trying to figure out what Speedo gear color I need for ordering a transmission for it. Is there anything that would give clear guidelines on figuring it out.

Remove the speedometer cable from the tail shaft of the transmission you currently have. It will be color coded.

If you don't have a bad transmission that you're replacing then you need to figure out what gears you have in you rear end.

How do you figure out the gears for the rear end? Sorry. I’m new to most of this. This car has been in the family since it came off the showroom floor and I’m refusing to let it die.

Are you actually putting a TH200C back in it? Most came with the TH250C in the early 80's, fine behind a 307. Most by 83 were TH2004R. The TH250C/350C and TH2004R are better transmissions for your heavy Delta 88.

Unfortunately, TH200c is what came on the car. And I’m not too sure on what goes into transmission swapping. I’m newer to all this stuff. So, I just get a bit afraid.

Did you order a replacement transmission online? Does your car still run?

the car still runs. Just didn’t get to get outside to check out the Speedo gear or rear end. Just gotta have a new transmission. I plan on ordering one. It’s cheaper than having it rebuilt locally!

Why do you need a new transmission if the car runs?

The transmission is shot. Sorry. Should’ve clarified that. Motor runs strong.

Did you check the fluid in the transmission? If it's completely shot it should be burnt and have clutch material in it.

Not trying to be an @$$, just covering all the bases before you spend big bucks on a transmission.

I gotcha. I pulled the pan all the way off after carefully spilling the fluid everywhere due to no drain plug. Haha! And there were chunks all in the pan. Is that what those plastic chunks were?

Be cautious. Plastic chunks could be from the deteriorated speedometer gear. What color were the chunks of plastic?

Bad transmission fluid will smell obviously burnt, be dark brown in color and might even have fibrous clutch material in it. It might be worthwhile to change the filter on your transmission and to refill it properly to see if the transmission is still good.
