TH 350 leaking, 71 Cutlass

Hello everyone,

Since i have the car (for about 4 years), i have transmission fluid - leaking issues. The first time, the transmission only dropped fluid when the car was sitting longer than a few days like in the winter break. I think the reason was converter-drain back in combination with bad filler tube, kickdown cable and speedometer seals, so i replaced them.

Now these spots are dry, but the next (and even worse) issue started. Everytime i park the car in my garage, i have fluid on the floor. So i washed and wiped the transmission with brake cleaner and figured out that the fluid is coming fron the front under the converter. The Pump itself is dry, so i think its no the central seal ring who causes the leak, it has to be the large paper gasket of the pump itself.

I know that i have to pull the tranny to replace the gaskets/seals in the front. But i'm a bit afraid of pulling the Pump to replace the seals.

Is it a big deal to do this job? Any tips or ideas from the transmission experts here?

Thanks to all for some replys!

Greetings from Austria!

Pulling the pump is not difficult; but, before doing that try to sneak in as much as possible to snug the bolts on the bottom of the pump. It may stop the leak. You will only be able to access some of the bolts.

Before pulling the pump stand the transmission so that it is vertical in a rugged trash can or fixture then unbolt and remove the pump. Don't put the transmission horizontal. I suggest replacing the front pump bushing and front pump seal while it is apart. Inspect the pump for wear and the nose of the converter where the seal rides.

Good luck!!!

And turn the input shaft as your torquing the pump bolts. If it suddenly locks up, you know something moved when you removed the pump. Either some clutches become disengaged, thrust washer or sealing ring isn’t positioned correctly, etc. Better to find the issue while the trans is out!!
