Okay so heres the thing............
I have an 86 Cutlass with an obvious TH350c in it that is weak and reverse is gone.

I have a Chevy TH350 non lockup that I would like to put in place of the BOP
lockup.

I have already figured out that I can get the bell adapter plate.
Problem is that the chevy TH350 has the 9 inch tail shaft.
The BOP has the 6 inch tail shaft.

I was told by someone that these tailshafts and housings can be swapped therefore solving swap problem.

Any insight or verification of these things would be greatly appreciated.

 

You have to take the transmission all the way apart to change the tail shaft. At that point you should just rebuild the one you have. Where are you located? I have a rebuilt one from a 69 Cutlass with 300 miles on it. I am in Brazil Indiana. I have $500 on it.

If they are both TH350 then yes, You can change the tail shaft and tail housing out. Just don't see the point in getting an adapter if you have to take them both apart. Why not just take one apart and rebuild it and then you don't need the adapter plate.

 

Now that I read your post over again, Not sure we are talking about the same thing. I don't think they ever made a TH350 with a lock up converter?

 

the TH 350c has the electrical plug on drivers side above tranny pan which indicates that it is a lock up convertor trans. weaker and my shift kit wont work in it. other thing is i have a fully built chevy trans with like 700 miles on it. Its a regular TH350 non lock up

 

I had no idea they made one. I don't know if anything will interchange or not then.

 

You would be far ahead to TRADE your fine C type trans for a BOP type that will be easier to work with, IMHO

 

You could just buy a core bop trans gut it and put the chevy th350 guts into a bopc case. Most cores run about 25 to 50 bucks.

 

One of the guys I work with is a trans builder by trade he said it would be 75 bucks to put my bop tailshaft and housing in my chevy trans found adapter plate new from summit for 60 . so id have like 135 in the whole thing and my chevy 350 is bad a$$ so what do you think. he made it seem like it was no biggie. just wanted to hear it from you guys as well.

 

Its too long to explain but the guts from your th350 chevy trans will go into a short shaft bop case. The clutch drums pull from the shafts so essentialy you can take all the modified parts and stick them on bop core regardless of shaft length . That would be the best way to do it but I'm not gonna go into details because its lengthy . Essentially if you take a trans apart it will make sense. But if your trans guy is telling you he will change the tailshaft length to match your bop trans and you still need an adapter that's hack as all heck. Buy a core for 50 bucks and swap the guts and you don't need an adapter.
