T-50 swap
Hi all, I currently have a 1977 442 that's original with a 260 and T-50 trans. I'm planning to replace the engine with a 455 (it's from a automatic trans) and plan to replace the T-50 with a T-5 or a GM 4 speed. The T-50 shifter looks farther back on the trans compared to other transmissions or am I just imagining it. If so, that would explain why my car didn't come with a console.
Has anyone else made such a switch on their cars or an expert on GM manual transmissions? This is my first manual trans car.
Thanks.

I'm not an expert on GM manual transmissions but the '73 Cutlass/442 was available with the Muncie 4spd from the factory. They share the same floor pan as the '77 so it should be a direct fit. I've seen them with or without a center console, good luck with your build.
A factory T-5 will not handle the torque of a 455 and will end up in pieces rather quickly, just not as fast at the T-50. If you are willing to pay for it a Tremec TKO would handle the torque, but you're gonna spend some money to make it work.
Old thread, I know, but came across it and wanted to fill in some information. Everything above is correct but for measuring purposes. So for those of you with 350s and at least a 3.42 gear, you COULD make a Camaro T5 with a Mustang tailhousing and top plate last behind your cruiser.
