Auto to 5 speed?

Anyone done the auto to 5 speed. Thinking of doing this in my 68 442. If so what trans have you had success with. Thinking of finding tremic out of 5.0 or cobra mustang instead of new one any thoughts on what has work we'll for others?

If your 68 is a 455, the Mustang T5s are rated a bit over 300ft/lbs.
Then there's adapting the GM to Ford trans to bell housing pattern. Then mating the ford 10 spline disk to another pressure plate/flywheel, along with the pilot bearing.
It can be done and I've seen these things done, but not the approach I would suggest as a bolt on.

Trans swap

Mine will be G block 400. Hurst and American powertrain both have kits for the swap with or without trans. Original auto trans in mine is turbo 400. Building to drive not race. Interstate RPM's is my only concern and only reason considering the swap. Because engine and trans both original matching numbers units. Last time I drove this car was over 15 yrs ago and don't rem what RPM's were on highway. Think factory gear for auto was a 308? But not sure do know it is original also

Go with the Hurst/American powertrain kits.
They use a TKO (3550 derivative) with GM input shaft and trans to bell bolt pattern. Infinitely easier than adapting a ford trans.
With a 3.08 I would not go too low on the 5th gear OD.

I built a stout t-5 from an 86 mustang GT.
Have about $700.00 in the trans and i had to have a custom adaptor machined to make it fit.

Had it in the car for 5 years, no issues.

I installed the Legend Gear 5 speed OD, no cutting required, I just drove 4605 miles on the Power Tour, great transmission!

Cool 5 speed

I put a Richmond 5speed overdrive in my 68-no hump cutting, just 2 inches added to the back of the existing 4 speed shifter opening. Everything else was the same, very smooth shifting and my 3.91's are 3.08's in 5th. Very cool and I surprise a ton of guys when they think they have me, I drop it into 5th and pull away!!! Oh yeah, it can handle over 600 ft lbs.
