Stock 71 350 flywheel weight
Stock 71 350 flywheel weight
Hello all. What is the external weight for a factory 350 manual flywheel?
Found 28 oz external weight for new McLeod flywheel. Centerforce has 25 oz for new flywheel. Does the 3 oz difference matter? Are these two weights close to what factory external rear balance used?
Have a new McLeod flywheel (neutral balance), 28 oz weight and know where it is supposed to mount by Mcleod.
Just thinking that most 350 engines had same external weights with harmonic balancer and rear flex or flywheel. Find it hard to believe the factory would spin balance or balance each motor and just used the standard external flex or flywheel weight on all 350s.
Dave.

The stock balance spec is 25 oz-in. 3 ounce inches is a huge difference. Most people also do not understand that the 25 oz is not the actual weight of the balance weight on the flywheel. It is the amount of unbalance. It is actually "ounce-inches" So it is 25 ounces of weight at a one inch radius.
You could have 10 different "25 oz-in" flywheels and the actual bolt on weight could be totally different on all of them depending on the distance from the center that the weight is mounted, the shape of the weight etc etc.
So basically no you cannot swap weights from flywheel to flywheel.

Dave,
I have found the best way to do a replacement flywheel is . . . . . if you have a flywheel or flexplate that was on the engine and running smoothly, take that flywheel along with the replacement to somebody who balances crankshafts and have them match the replacement to the original. It normally takes about a half hour to do it so its not outrageously expensive. I typically charge $75 or so.

Shout out to Bill who is one hell of a nice guy and does top notch work.
The engine runs smooth, no vibrations and is spot on. Runs just like it did with original flexplate.
I'd recommend to all in east and southern MD, thanks again.
