This may sound pretty basic, but what is the correct way to check the fluid level? I have a 1963 Dynamic 88 and the dip stick says to check it when warm, and the engine at idle. Would this be with it running in neutral, park, or in drive? I don't see any further detail in the service manual either.

After driving a few miles and the
car is at operating temp is the time.

On a level surface in park, ideling.
Pull the stick, wipe, and re-insert.
That should give you the right reading.

I always move the shifter to put it in each gear then back in park and check the fluid.

Thanks to everyone for the reply. Much appreciated. I feel allot better now, and just came back from a 10 mile trip and checked it. It was down about 1/2 of a quart. This transmission has been great so far in the last 4 years that I've owned the car and just wanted to keep it that way. Lot's of bad experiences from other people I've read about, but mine has been great. I've spent a considerable amount of time and care to adjust the carb and transmission linkage to get things right. I even had to fabricate the carb to bell crank linkage as mine was missing when I purchased the car. When you set it up properly, it shifts pretty smooth, and kicks down fine when you need it. Thanks again for all of your help. This is a great site because of people like your self that are willing to share your knowledge. Thanks again, and have a great thanksgiving, or whatever your up to.
