I'm 85 Delta 88 is at AAMCO. Was getting my transmission checked out because it needs to be rebuilt. When I took it up there, they said they have to do a diagnostic. I was like "ok.. I know for fact it needs to be totally rebuilt." So after about 2 weeks of my car being there they call me today and basically tell me what I already told them. Last week guy says it shouldn't be more than 1,700. That's pretty steep I think but I was willing. So today he calls and tells me the price... guess the price... 2,700. Im getting my car back -_-... that's so ridiculous to me.

 

Anyone put there with a 85 delta 88 that has had their transmission rebuilt? If so, how much did you pay? AAMCO just priced mine and said 2700. Like that's more than what the car is worth. Makes no sense.

Yep, too high. Pull the damn thing yourself and take it to a private owner trans shop. Ask guys in your area who they use. Everybody knows a trans guy. I just had a Turbo 425 (?) gone through for my Toro and it was 800 or 900 bucks. I did bring it there out of the car though.

Yeah, I'm going to get my car and then drop the tranny myself. I didn't trust those dudes in the beginning smh

 

That seems reasonable, from the service provider's point of view
We are real busy, but if this guy ponies up $2700, we can fit it in.


Let's see [used to work at trans shop]
One guy all day to R&R it
One guy all day to rebuild it, that's $200 in wages already
Add $400 for the kit and some mitaswell parts like a torque converter
$600 so far.


Add a reasonable profit to pay the tax man and keep the lights and heat on, say, $2000 per job....


There you go, $2600
plus tax.


Them guys have a place up north that needs new siding, you know.
They have costs.

 

Every other shop is quoting me about 1000. 3000 for a transmission just seems steep. It's not a Mercedes! I just can't do it. I feel like I'm getting robbed put of my money

 

There is no reason to start multiple threads about your trans stick with one. You realize in order to take your car out of their shop to go to another you will have to pay for work performed to date unless you are getting a free estimate. Your in a tough spot. I'm not sure what it costs to rebuild and R&R, I'm sure its higher than a typical T350/400.

 

I have no problem paying for the work already done. It's just a rant, and I'm upset is all. And yeah, a real tough spot

 

Fwiw in my area I had a local reputable shop quote me 1500 to drop and fully rebuild the trans in my 2000 dodge durango. They cut and rebuild the converter as well. 2600 is just absurd.

 

That's what I'm saying. Like who are they trying to fool?

 

Wow. I paid $1600 about 8 years ago to a local shop to rebuild the tranny in my 85 Custom Cruiser.

2700 sounds like WAAAAAY too much. Get the hell out of there, man.

kinda unrelated but i got an '85 delta and my trans is making a humming noise (in all gears) when warm and shifting a little late in 2nd,it shifts hard when i let off the throttle, do u think it needs a total rebuild?

 

Is it a 350 turbo?
