I have a 1984 Delta 88 with a 307 engine. When I shift into reverse, it gets into gear but hesitates until more gas is added. I checked the fluid and it was low but when it was full it still lagged. Thanks in advance.

Drop the pan and see if there is clutch material in the oil. You might have a damaged transmission.

Would that mean loosening and raising the engine? Or is that for an oil pan?

You should be able to drop the transmission pan by raising the car on jack stands and crawling underneath it. You might not even need to raise the car. All you will need is a ratchet and an oil catch pan.

Okay. Thanks. I'll give it a try. Then what do I look for? On an oil pan there was a screen filter that needed to be scraped off and sludge to be cleaned out. Would there be the same thing on the tran?

I saw in FAQ a filter and fluid change may be in order. I don't have an owners manual and tried looking it up but can't seem to find it. How much fluid would it take? A friend says about 5 quarts but that seems kind of much.

1984 Delta 88 Royale with a 307 engine.

Thanks

The auto parts store should be able to tell you how much fluid your transmission will need with a filter and pan gasket change.

Ztim, don't bother. It will just waste your money trying to band aid a broken bone. The trans is probably shot. Mine does the same thing.
It must be a 200c trans quirk.
I've been only driving mine forward for about 10,000 miles now. All forward gears work flawlessly. 165,000 miles on mine before reverse finally went.
It's probably an internal fluid valve that sticks or something. I have another trans I may be able to send to you.
If I can confirm that a th350 will go in place of a 200c without any driveshaft issues, I'll have an extra laying around.
