Console shift cable adjustment
Console shift cable adjustment
I have a console shift AT, 1970 Cutlass. I have noticed that the shift indictor does not line up with the Prindle letters, it is always a bit to the rear. In addition, my reverse lights flash on when I go to reverse, but then while in reverse they go out, as if the light switch has been pushed too far. Both these conditions are consistent with the lever being pulled too far back.
I think that this may be fixed by adjusting the shift cable as per the 1970 CSM page 7-27.
Before I get into it though I wonder if I have assembled the shift cable correctly, specifically if the position of the yoke is correct, forward of the bracket slot - see attached photo.
Could someone please advise if I have the yoke on correctly.
Thanks.

The picture looks correct, but it has been a while since I have been under mine so my memory may not be 100% on that.
You are probably right about it needing to be adjusted. There is a slight bit of adjustment where the cable is bolted to the bracket - the hole is slotted to allow some fore-aft movement. I have a similar issue with my Dual Gate shifter every time I do anything with the transmission, and I have to play with that adjustment for a while until Park and 1st are in the proper positions.

Your picture appears to be correct. As long as the detents in the trans line up with the detents in the shifter its adjusted correctly. I have noticed the Prindle is back slightly on my car, its been that way as long as I have owned it. I think thats just the way they are.
