The BW T-10 4 speed in my 62 Jetfire has a first gear of 2.54 and would like to make that lower. There were other T-10's of that era that had 2.64 and 2.73 first gears. I have no experience with dealing with transmission gear ratios but how big of difference would it be going from 2.54 to 2.73? Would that be a relly big change to where I should find 2.64? Any thoughts?

My 4 speed car has 15 inch wheels on it and also I feel the first gear is to tall. You have to slip the clutch a lot to take off and can have clutch chatter really bad at times. I am a purist but I also want to drive this car lots of miles after it is done. I would rather enjoy it more in this department than have it be pure.

i know that the difference in 1st gear between a m20 and m21 muncie is quite noticeable,i think they are 2.54 and 2.20.not sure on those numbers.i think there are saginaws with a low first gear (2.70 ish) that might hold up behind your engine

Super T-10's , which are still made by Richmond Gear , Offer low gear ratios of 2.36 , 2.64, 2.88 , and 3.42 to 1 .
You will have to use a 26 spline clutch disc to install one.

I think I read that the Super T-10 guts will not work in a T-10. I will look up Richmond gear and see what they have.

This is true . You would need the complete trans . They are available from Jegs , Summit , etc .

I want to keep the original transmission in the car and just swap out the guts for a lower first gear if possible. I just need to figure out what gears I want to go with. I may end up leaving it stock if I can't find what I want and the gears not beat on for the past 50 years.

I know mine is 2.54. I need to call around and see what my options are. I am thinking I will go with the 2.64 because I also don't want a really huge gap between 1st and 2nd

Autogear is a great company, I think they have a 3.00 gearset for muncies, not sure what they have for T10.
I'm running a 3.42 1st super T10 with 2.73 rear. I used to have a 2.6 Muncie and had to slip the clutch too.
I think you'll have to get a new trans to get the results you want. Also note the higher the 1st gear, the weaker the trans. Mine's just a DD, so no issues there.
The spacing between gears is unusually wide, so you'll want to use it with a wide, low end torque motor. I'm using an LS based 5.3 EFI motor, so the combo works well.
Richmond still sells them new, but used ones out of 80-82 F body cars can be found. Note the 82 tail is cast for a torque arm and mods must be made for a standard T10 shifter (but they're cheap, got mine used for $100).
