200r4 t.v cable adjustment

Just purchased a 200r4 from a "reputable" transmission outfit for my 500 h.p 455 engine. Its in a 1970 cutlass. Need to know how to set this cable correctly before I drive this thing. Knowing this adjustment is VERY critical to the life of the trans, I don't want to damage this costly piece. Thanks.

Adjustments are made with the engine off. Locate the Adjust Tab on the cable housing. Press in the tab and push the slider
Release the tab and rotate the throttle lever to WOT and the cable will self adjust itself as evidenced by a few audible clicks. Release the throttle lever and check the cable for any signs of binding or sticking.
Road test the vehicle. Under moderate acceleration your shift points should be close to the following:
1-2…………………15-20 MPH
2-3…………………25-30 MPH
3-4…………………40-45 MPH

To little adjustment starves the clutch packs...trans failure.

The cable should be fully extended not over extended at WOT.

Check out the link below for a more in-depth look at what a TVC is actually doing and how to properly adjust.

ok. Thanks. Now just to clarify.... when the throttle is closed, I set the initial cable with NO slack or Slight tension? Tighten slider against the tab that's on the carb. Push to unlock the self adjustment and give it full throttle. Will hear clicking and the cable sheath move forward then push tab to re-lock it. Does this sound right?

Yes. There shouldn't be any slack with the throttle closed. No cable dangeling...Your trans builder can confirm all of this and I'd think help u dial it in? If u can't achieve proper closed and WOT adjustment then the geometry is wrong. Ie...distance of travel. Pay attention to the shift points. Early shifts mean u need to tighten it up a few clicks. Excessive RPM delayed up shifts when in passing gear mode means it to tight. You want it to be tighter rather then looser. But at WOT you don't want the throttle to be pulling hard against the end of the TV travel. You'll break the cable or the TV mount hole in the trans and be limitting WOT. keep gently road testing to get the rough adjustment up shifts at the speeds I listed. Then try tightening up a click at a time to get it dialed in. If the trans was set up right with a good kit and other internal hard part mods to survive a 455s torque you should get fairly stout up shifts. Again refer to who built it. They will know what kind TV line pressures and up shifts you should expect.

can be you be more specific about "reputable". I know the turbo buick world pretty good so i know who the good and bad builders of the 2004r are.

as far as cable adjustment, they all will usually say nothing but factory spec and then hook up a pressure gauge and verify the pressures in each gear. i saw someone posted a link to extreme automatics, lonnie knows his stuff and is at the top of the list of good builders.

X3, buy a pressure gauge and hook it up. The factory style cable is push the button and crank the carb to full throttle. The aftermarket style should have slight tension at idle and full pull at full throttle.

what are you using for carb brackets to get the correct "pull"?
as above you need it to bring pressure up quick as the throttle is applied and have a "full pull" at wot.
