200-4Rtransmission case paint

Today I spent several hours cleaning the corrosion and filth off my 200-4R transmission case... I never want to see corrosion on my transmission again!!

I have several extra cans of a paint called over-kote plus, which is for painting gas tanks (black). Goes on with a paintbrush. I really like this stuff, it is thick and dries hard as a rock. I have painted control arms and stuff with it in the past and even after a few years nothing has rusted through or peeled, not even a little.

I was planning on painting my transmission with this paint, but a friend of mine insists that since the paint is black and so thick, it will hold too much heat in the transmission and overheat it. His reasoning is that transmission cases are bare aluminum in order to dissipate heat.

At first I thought he was ridiculous but I would hate to try to take this kind of paint off if he turned out to be correct. But then again I'll be using a B&M supercooler (70266) in the cooling circuit.

Do you guys think a thick coating of black paint on a transmission will raise its internal temperatures significantly or is that completely nonsense? Any suggestions for an alternate paint?

Thanks!!!

Sorry it took some time to reply I was still in the newbie section and couldn't post. I am not sure about the paint that you plan to use but I have painted a TH350 with a base coat clear coat combo total of four coats of paint and it cooled fine. I do have an external cooler due to the stall converter I used but this transmission has been fine for five years daily driven for about two with no issue.

I think you should be fine. Just make sure the transmission case is clean so the pain adheres well. You see cars in Hot Rod all the time with painted transmissions.

Eastwood has an aluminum-finish paint that they make for trannys. Also other colors if you like something custom.
