200-4r rebuild

I have a 2004r trans that I want to put in my '67 Cutlass and it needs rebuilding. I have read lots of information about the assembly and it doesn't look to be outside my abilities but I can't seem to find a rebuild kit that will fit it. The trans I have has KTF on the tag and 245-882KTF0767 under that.

This is a hard number to decypher using the following table. According to the text, the transmissions that have an "F" are 86-90, and should have a 15 digit number. As you can see, mine has a 13 digit number which makes it an 82-85 unit. The 4th digit of the 82-85 units should be the shift that built the trans but that would be 8th shift? That doesn't seem right!

I'm pretty sure this is an 82 trans and that brings up a whole new problem. I can't find a performance rebuild kit for that year. The kits only seem to go back as far as 86. Anyone have a better source for trans numbering? Anyone know if the performance rebuild kits will fit?

Any help would be appreciated.

CJsDad:
I think you have a 1988 trans from a generic Chevy 307. I have an '88 CRF core that has a similar tag ID number. I've been told that this trans can be a little tricky to rebuild yourself (not as easy as a TH350 or 400). There's lots of info on these transmissions on at www.trubobuick.com. Here's a few links I've collected in preparation for my future build, good luck with yours!

There is no such thing as a 1988 Chevy 307. In 1988 you could get a Chevy-built 305 or an Olds-built 307. Both were called 5.0 liter motors.

The Devil is always in the details Joe, but I interpreted that to say 'you have a 1988 trans from a generic GM-built vehicle with a 307 engine'.

You being the walking encyclopedia of all things Oldsmobile, do you have any more insight into the ID tag I posted?

BTW, here is a perfect illustration for why you should replace the pump stator shaft. The factory one on my trans is worn almost completely away. The splines are almost knife-edged where they are worn away.

I guess I shouldn't post so early in the morning. You're right (of course) either a Chevy 305 or Olds 307.

Not sure how links to other sites are handled so this might get removed.

This is where I documented my over haul.

There are some tools you might want to get to make things easier.
Also the ck manual is quite informative. I wouldn't have tried an overhaul without having read it.
