1967 442 4 speed shifter location

Hello, I have a 1967 Cutlass that I just changed over to a 4 speed with an M-21 and a factory 442 shifter for a '67. I will not be using a console but I need to know if the shifter should be mounted to the trans on the front or rear mounting holes. I have it on the rear but it seems to be to far back. Can someone please let me know where it should be?

Thanks,
Tom
