Recommendations/Advice Needed Trans Swap
Hi,
I have a 64 Cutlass with a 330 and it has a turbo 350 trans. I need to replace/build the trans and I am thinking maybe I should go with a 4 speed Automatic instead of the 3 speed 350. So my question is should I switch to the 4 speed auto, and if so which one should I go with?
Thanks for your recommendations in advance.

The two practical choices are the 200-4R and the 700R4. Frankly neither one is adequate in stock form. The 200-4R is less popular but has better ratios and is a bolt-in swap for the TH350 - same length, same driveshaft, etc. The only change you'll need to make is to move the crossmember back. The 200-4R has it's mount in the same place as a TH400. On newer cars this isn't a problem since the frame is drilled for both crossmember locations. Unfortunately the TH400 wasn't an option on your 64 so the holes aren't there. You'll have to drill them. If you have a convertible or the optional HD boxed frame on a hardtop, you'll need to weld extensions to the crossmember mounting tabs. The other thing to be aware of is that since the e-brake cables are hung from the crossmember, moving the crossmember requires the use of different length cables. Since the 200-4R puts the crossmember in the same place as for a TH400, just get the front and intermediate cables for a 1967 Cutlass with TH400.
Your other problem will be the shifter. If you have a stock floor shift, Shiftworks sells the correct quadrant and indicator plate for the OD trans. Finally, you'll need to provide for the converter lockup, either through a simple toggle switch for manual control or using one of the more sophisticated aftermarket kits.
