'66-'67 Driver/passenger door rear view mirror confusion
OK, the more i read, the more I'm confused, and I haven't been able to determine what I/we should be using as rear view mirrors on our cars, especially as more people want to install the passenger side mirror onto their '66-'67 models. Here's what I've found so far, with no answers derived in any way.
There are a number of part numbers advertised for sale or wanted, and each one I have searched for online to try and determine or distinguish different features between them. Are we just seeing a variety of casting numbers, part numbers, etc that vary with no actual differences? The assembly manual shows part number 395983 for the driver's side door. I was not able to find a page showing the passenger door mirror on a drawing. Other numbers I have seen for the driver's side mirror are 982859, 982858, 395977, 395981, and 395975. So there are six numbers out there listed as being for the driver's side rear view and every one I have looked up and found looks exactly the same as the others. Yesterday I found an NOS GM mirror in the unopened box marked "982859 Rear View Outside Mirror L.H. or R.H." Upon opening that box, I found the casting number of the mirror to be 395977. I know there are discussions had that indicate there are separate part numbers for LH and RH outside mirrors, but what of this GM box that has BOTH sides listed with the single part number (and it's not the number in the assembly manual)?
Any and all input is welcome. Again, I have searched as much as I can to find ANY kind of visual difference(s) between these part numbers, but I only have online auctions and posts such as this one as reference. I know members such as GReggL have been looking for the 982859, which I found to be a 395977 when opened. I also see these same numbers used when describing a '67 Cutlass/F85 rear view. What is correct?

Here is that mirror next to a 395983 and a 395977. I didn’t include the Fusick reproduction, shown below on my car.
Here are the comparative bases. All are the same. They measure the same, the mount brackets interchange, the screw is the same. There is no difference in the angle of the base or the stem/neck. The mirrors are the same diameter.

OK, here's the info I get from my 3/69 Oldsmobile Parts Book for ONLY 1967 Toro, manual mirror.
Group 10.185, Mirror Assembly, Rear View - RH Outside - #982859; LH Outside, with bracket, gasket, & set screw - #230366.
Both numbers still show in 2/70 Price Schedule, so still available then, and not yet with superseded numbers. In 5/75 Price Schedule, #230366 is still listed, but #982859 is missing.
Maybe this helps with your search - good luck.

with reference to drawing at top with #395983 - Mirror Assembly, that number is replaced with #230366 in 2/70 Price Schedule. Maybe the Mirror Assembly was just the mirror without the mounting bracket and gasket in the complete "kit," and it eventually didn't make sense to not just sell the complete kit since the separate mirror was the primary piece in the kit and the part that most often needed replacement.
First, BSiegPaint, thanks for directing me over here from my post. Torotoyguy, you have done a fine job of research and decoding to the point where I'm now more confused than ever, LOL. My restorer has my original LH manual mirror for my '67 Toro Deluxe, plus I sent him a NOS one that Fusick was recently selling on eBay. He swears on a stack of bibles that there's no way a LH mirror would fit with the correct angle, etc. on the RH side and yet your research seems to say otherwise, so I'll have to get him to give me the casting numbers inside. Hard to dispute it when you have 3 different mirrors lined up in a picture and they all look identical. I also have an Olds Parts Illustration and full Parts Manual, but mine is dated October, 1977 (I bought it back when I had a '72 Cutlass, so it worked great for it). The first pic if from an older parts book I found from somewhere on the interweb while #2 and #3 are the two pages from the '77 manual for GP 10.185 and the manual mirrors, and by then, there was nothing for '67 Toros. Appreciate the help!!!
Normally, I'd pull the pages out and scan them to PDF, but I was lazy... Let me know if you need help reading this one.

I'm sure you're right with that assessment. I see in the one pic that the 395983 is the "Mirror (LH Outside)" and 982859 is the "Mirror PKG (RH outside)". Of course the label I have shows "L.H. or R.H." with the 982859 part number, and it does come with the mounting pieces. I cannot find the part number 230365 anywhere online, so it obviously went away as well. But again, is it yet another number for seemingly the same part?
