Wheel bearing squeal?

1970 Toronado, I replaced my passenger side CV axle a while back due to a massive failure, put everything back together. The wheel seemed a little loose side to side when I tightened lug nuts, but I didn't pay much heed.

For a while now, whenever I turn right, a squealing/squeaking noise can be heard, as if there is a round object spinning in a non-round rotation. It is a high pitched, metallic (Not grinding though) sound ONLY when turning right. It is also NOT a belt squeal. Does this sound like a wheel bearing that needs replaced, or something more manageable? If it is likely a wheel bearing, is there a way to make the bearing come out easy, without removing the hub, on a 1970?

Thanks

Is it coming from the side you replaced? I was looking into replacing my RH CV axle recently and one of the guys I spoke with said that his replacement axle from NAPA had a diameter that was a little too small where it rides in the wheel bearing. I wonder if yours is the same and has a slight slop in it causing the noise?

Interesting. I recall (and can see now) that I wasn't able to reuse my old castle nut and had to instead use the one supplied with the CV Axle, as the new CV had threads that were a size or two smaller than the old one.

Kind of appreciated the smaller size, as it was hard to find a 1 1/2" socket. Guess that should have been a red flag, not a green flag. I bought my axle new from RockAuto, a Cardone assembly. Do people have better luck with Remanufactured? What brand makes the right CV Axle?

The CV axle rides in the hub which is pressed into the wheel bearing. Thinking about this, the slop would be between the axle splines and the hub splines (if there is indeed some clearance from your new cv axle). I guess you could check the fit using your old axle splines?

There should not be any looseness in the wheel though when you tighten the lug nuts, however. That could certainly point towards your bearing.

Since front disc brakes are standard on your '70 Toronado, could this possibly be a squeal due to rotor/pad/caliper interaction? I just don't think a bearing would make such a sound, but I could be wrong.

interesting thought. I know I need to replace rotors anyway since theyre braking as if they're warped, hopefully that might do it. Thanks
