What is this thing on a 67 Toro?

What is it?
That canister- looking thing on the driver's fenderwell. All that I know is that it's a California car with cruise control. Please see attached picture. Thanks

I've seen these on 1966's but not 67's. Its part of an early emissions control system required on California sold cars. You should also have a smog pump located below the AC compressor on the passenger side of the engine. There will also be additional vacuum lines/fittings on the engine, and steel lines attached to the heads one fitting going into each cylinder. Since I live right on the Oregon California border I've come across several cars with this setup. John

Hi Steve
My memory was off just a little bit. I looked at photos on my photbucket site and have picture of both 1966 and 1967 cars with this system on it. John

Thanks John. I was thinking that it looks like it could be a charcoal canister? Maybe it had a replaceable filter under that ribbed top?

John- From your explanation above I found a picture of it from Fig. 6EB-11 from my 67 service manual. It's called a "Filter and Silencer Assy". A hose connects to the air pump. I was wrong above thinking it was a charcoal cannister. Thanks again for your help. Mystery solved! Steve

So, basically, an air cleaner for the AIR pump.

If I'm not mistaken, in later years it was replaced by a 1" chunk of felt in a receptacle in the back of the AIR pump.
