Pulling a 455... tips? tricks?

Going to be pulling the engine out on Sunday.
Should I do it with the trans attached? Trans off?

Etc. etc.
Looking to do this the easiest way, obviously

We just had this discussion here, I know it's a 350 but it's basically the same procedure.

Toronado's a whole different bag. I'm not even sure you can pull the engine with the trans.

Either way, the way that the engine is mounted is unique, so you really only want to hear from others who've pulled Toro engines, which is a small group.

I am not sure if this will help or not because I haven't pull a toro engine, but on late model gm cars I put a car stand under the snout of the axle shaft to help support / angle the trans back for easier separation and installation
Hope it helps

I've pulled an engine before, although it was 333ci smaller, heh, so I know the basic process.

Wasn't sure if the process for the much simpler, old school v8's were all alike, and I see that they are not.

Sure you can pull the engine & tranny . I had to do this with a 68 Toro , because I couldn't get at the flexplate bolts . It wasn't very stable though . That is one heavy tranny .

I couldn't get at the bolts because I was a bigger noob then I am now . I couldn't figure out how to get at them or see all of them for that matter , so I just removed the whole shot . Once I had the motor & tranny out I found all the bolts . My cheap engine hoist was not very stable when I was lifting it out of there . I could barely move it with all that weight on there , and almost fell over . After that I made training wheels for the engine hoist . In the picture below I bolted two long 2x6's together so they stuck out on both sides of the hoist along with a wheel on each side , and it worked great . It was still hard to move that thing around though . I don't have the tranny anymore , but if you look to the left in the picture you see the motor . That tranny was a heavy beast .

It's definately easier to remove just the engine. My brother & I did it a few times back in the 80's. Use a factory shop manual to the letter, and you should be fine.

I took the motor and trans out together. As oldsguybry did, at the time I had no manuals and could not see all the flex plate bolts.
The heads were off at the time and the radiator and some other bits were out which made it easier.
When I put it back together I'll put the trans back in first.
