Hi All,
I'm working on a deal to pick up a '66 Toro... my first restoration job - very excited!
Car has no title, but here's the nameplate under the hood. Can anyone help me decipher where the VIN is? I'm going to pay a service search it for me to see if I can get a title. Also, if you would, let me know if 66 Toro
there's any other useful or neat information within the nameplate. Thank you!
The VIN number is on the driver's side door hinge pillar, the Trim tag is what you have pictured, there is no vin number there.... getting a Title can be difficult, you maybe going down a road with a dead end.
The VIN will be 13 characters and will start 396876Mxxxxxx.
That car was built the fourth week of Jan, 1966 in Lansing, MI. It was originally Champagne Mist upper and lower body color, with a fawn (antique parchment) strato bench interior. It came with tinted glass, power windows, power seat, A/C, rear seat speaker, and deluxe seat belts. I can't find a reference for the 3P code anywhere, however. That one has me stumped.
I follow you completely. Before going to look at the car I read this and found 369021F by the water pump heads 394548 and 394(646) (i think, it's hard to read). Motor is red so I know off the bat its the wrong motor for a Toro. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...cation-112127/
Don't be surprised if you find the VIN plate reads 9487 and not 9687. 9687 designates a Deluxe optioned car on the data plate. 9487 is Toronado generic car code.

Actually, Glenn, according to the 1966 CSM, the VINs were different for 94xx and 96xx series cars.

Same here! I've got a '68 455, second or third hand, and was told it came from a Toro. It was in a Ford truck when I bought it. It is red from the factory. Though not a sure fire indicator, the VIN derivative on it is 38M60094(5?). The last digit was not stamped very well. It has a "K" intake manifold. I know this is not Gospel, but the old Oldsmobile FAQ site has this line:K 398664 '68-'69 455 Toro. It also has a Toro short-base aircleaner.

All 1966-69 Toro motors are pale metallic blue. The fact that this 455 was in a Ford truck tells you that it has been messed with. 398664 is a Toro intake, but how do you know it was born on that motor? And how do you know that the red is original paint?
This is a 1968 Toro motor in it's original habitat.
Thanks, Joe; still learning, every day! I'm pretty sure the red is original, though it was on pretty thick on the VIN pad. I scraped off several coats and never found any different colors.
