AM Radio ***** Wont Fit Dash Cutouts on '68 Toro
Hey All,
I'm installing an AM radio that I was told was pulled from a 68 (on ebay) into my 68 Toro dash, but the ***** are a fraction too wide to fit the cutouts. The radio fits, just not the *****. The hole size is 1 7/16". Is there a chance that the AM/FM radio's have smaller *****? Are the radio **** cutouts different from 66-69?
Thanks,
--Todd

You have Cutlass *****...plastic...full size Olds have metal *****. Toro might have their own *****...with radial lines? I have one somewhere but not available at this time. Some Cutlass people like to put the full size ***** on their cars. The back Cutlass ***** are painted metal and the front **** is plastic.

Exact specific sizes may differ, I have not checked, but for 1968 the Toro and A-body ***** look alike. Black with silver stripe. I thought they were all plastic but perhaps the Toro ***** are metal. The 88/98 [Oldsmobile exc. F85/Tor.] are a similar design but in metal and silver with black stripe I think.
I cannot ck the PN manual here at work.

AM Radio ***** Wont Fit Dash Cutouts on '68 Toro
Here's a few pics of the AM radio installed in the dash. I've looked at overhead shots of the AM/FM radio's for sale on Ebay, and it looks like the ***** are smaller. I'm about to buy one, but it would be great to know for sure. Can somebody measure the **** width of their AM/FM Wonder Bar for me?

Ah that clarifies it a bit
I have run into this before
something about the Toro faceplate vs radio shafts differing due to the slopey front. Are you sure it is a Toro radio? Do you have the model # off the radio's tag?
after looking in the garage and PNManual...
here are some '68 ***** differences
Silvery metal on left is 88/98
Black plastic on right is F85 [thru Cutlass 442 HO and Vista] and Toro.
I measured the 397578 radio face plate [unknown application] at 2.75" dia recesses and the shafts should be 6.25" on center. It was loosely on a '68 Toro AM FM Wonderbar radio.
Gr. 9.649 lists various ***** for many years
7306013 CONTROL, speaker fader; 68 F85, Tor.
7306023 CONTROL, speaker fader; 68 exc. F85, Tor., or stereo radio
397865 **** (tune & volume); 68 F85,Tor.
400806 **** (tone); 68 F85 or Tor.
400807 **** (dummy); 68 F85 or Tor.
400802 **** (tune & volume); 68 exc. F85 or Tor. [e.g., 88 or 98]
400803 **** (tone); 68 exc. F85 or Tor.
400805 **** (dummy); 68 exc. F85 or Tor.
400804 **** (stereo radio-balance); 68 exc. F85 or Tor.
400808 **** (stereo radio-balance); 68 Tor. [editor: ONLY '68 Toro.]
All clear as mud yet?
Don't you need that 68 Toro AM FM Wonderbar radio for your collection?
Yeah that is a big ol bag of radio ***** there, mostly from 1980's cars. Woodish types.

Sure, that makes sense
well I have the 397578 radio mount plate which my database asserts is 68-9 F85 series.
IT fits the ***** perfectly.
The ***** as we see above are the same PN for Toro and F85, therefore the same part.
Cigarguy, let's hear some numbers off what you have, and how that compares to the list I set forth above for the proper parts for the 68 F85/Toro.
The radio I have is a 7303243 according to my notes - 68 Toro Wonderbar signal seeking.

If your correct 68 ***** do not mate the dash maybe yr dash panel is wrong
look at this '69 toro dash
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...oject-car.html
and the CL link I posted to another '69 dash
Have them measure their dash holes, see if they are too small for a '68 ****, as you find

Updates
1) radio shipped FedEx Friday 5/1/15
2) search of my database tells me 68-9 radio support die cast plate is 397578
Running that past google finds
http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=89836
which confirms my 68-9 F85 part is... 68-9 F85 w/radio
and tells me it is in Group 10.252, which allows me to find OTHER such parts in my paper copy.
But wait, there is the same page right there on the interwebs. It says
68 B/C cars used a woodgrain plate here also.
No such plate shown for a 68 [or any] Toronado
previous wiki page lists LOTS of various color plates for Toronados, but unclear what part they are actually referring to.
So, it's back to you need to do the legwork required to find out why your dash panel does not fit 1968's 1.8" OD *****. I suspect you have a 1969 Toro dash panel.
One solution would be to use 1969 or really any other small ***** on your radio until and unless you can get the right dash part. I suggest a visit to the Olds Homecoming show near Lansing around Father's day each year, where you can compare '68 and '69 Toro, probably, and find parts hoarders who might have such a thing.
Try a google IMAGE search for 68 vs 69 Toro dash views.
visit pages of interesting views
see if the pictures confirm the suspicion of similar dash panels having different **** hole diameters.
see if you can contact the owner of said page and lead to someone who has a spare part?
.++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I just reviewed your photos above, which confirms you have the wrong dash panel for a '68 Toro.
here is a pic i just took of the '68 RH outer larger METAL part of the ****.
It is 1.77 or 1&7/8" OD not counting the 3 wings.
All '68 F85 and Toro used these *****, which upon close inspection are METAL outer larger part and PLASTIC inner "I" shaped part.
http://imagizer.imageshack.com/img910/3238/R6EYcL.jpg
I should have sent a set of smaller ***** that you can squeak by with for now.
Oh yeah, you need the 3-prong fader for the RH outer ****, which is a problem.
Anyone know if the 3-prong fader is available in 1969+ style?
I don't think I have ANY of those left but can probably find the jumper that lets you do w/o the fader feature until you get the right dash panel. I have about a dozen old radios on the shelf.

Here is a guy that has one of each '68 and '69, to compare, and says they can donate parts:
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...oject-car.html
You two should talk.

As Chris said I do have both a 1968 & 1969 Toronado parts cars. After reading through your post I'm not sure what you need, but if I can provide any measurements let me know. Then once you get the AM/FM radio in your hands let me know If I can provide something to help make it fit.

OK, I can confirm as Chris said that the big chrome w/black paint instrument panels are different between 68 & 69. I don't think you can make the radio ***** interchange, so you may need to swap out the whole panel if you want to use the correct *****. Yes, 1969 used the fader with the three pins. Check out the photos and let me know if there's anything else I can help provide. John
First, is the 1968 panel. Note that the raised ring is only on the lower 1/2.

Then the 1969 panel, which I believe you have. Note they both have a slot for the three pins on the fader ****.

Lastly, here's the ***** for each side by side. The 1968 has a large ring around it. The 1969 is just raised near the center and the fader has the three pins.
