67 Toronado Half Shafts

Are the left and right CV joint half shafts the same in the 67?
I know for my 78 Eldorado, both sides are the same. I do see different part numbers, but who knows. Maybe they are interchangeable?

I believe that only in '66 are the shafts unequal length. But from I've heard from other Toro owners the '67 and later shafts can be used in the '66.

Were you asking about the CV joint itself or the entire axle shafts? I pulled the engine/transaxle out of a 1967 Toronado last Fall and here's what the axle shafts look like. I'm sorry I don't remember for sure, but I think it was the passengerside that had the extra weight/damper thingy on it. John

John,

If I recall correctly, that damper is specific to 1966 only and was designed in to counter some of the effects of a high horsepower FWD application. I believe it was considered over engineering and was eliminated thereafter.

Thanks Chris
In a 30-40 year old car its very possible the shaft was swapped in when the original CV joints went bad.

Mine has the damper too. How many hours are we looking to remove the whole shafts? Per side. Did you have to drain the coolant?

I was pulling the engine and transmission as I'm parting out the car. You should be able to remove both axles in a couple hours. But one heads up, the outboard nut holding it to the hub is very large. I happened to have a 3/4 drive set with long breaker bar, and I think the socket was 1 7/16" or 1 1/2" so make sure you've a way to remove that before starting the tear down. The fasteners that hold it to the shafts that go into the transmission require a 12 point wrench or socket. I used a wrench and had no problem getting them loose. Let us know if any additional questions come up.

Thanks. Will definitely do. The CV joints are on my list of projects for this year.
