The real Oldsmobile FAQs

After 13 years and nearly 35,000 posts, it seems like the same few topics are truly frequently asked questions on this site.

Why is my replacement water pump the wrong length?

Why does my power steering belt squeal?

Why does my fuel pump have three lines?

What is this (TCS) valve on my engine?

And of course....

Why do my motor mounts not line up?

And finally...

Why don't headers fit Supreme?

And FYI, most of these have stickies.

Earlier today I contributed to a thread about the Slim Jim Rotohydramatic. I searched for additional info I had posted in the past on the Slim Jim and came up with... lots of threads to choose from. I've found that I seem to contribute the same thing over and over again. Anyways...

Seems like the best way to search for Olds stuff is thru Google, which most times sends you back here to CO. When I searched here on CO for a certain subject I couldn't find what I wanted. So then went on Google and got sent right back here with 4-5 threads about the subject.

The best way to search this site is to go to Google and in the search box first type "classicoldsmobile.com" (WITH the quotes), followed by the term you want to search. That will restrict the Google search to this site.

The best advice was Joe’s comment on how to search this site. I am relatively new to this site, I am guilty of asking some questions that may be repetitive , however I did search before posting them. Now that I am aware of this search function using google it has made a much more efficient search..Thanks.. I know and understand Pontiacs, have owned 5 oldsmobiles so I am constantly learning..4 of those Olds were when I was a youth.. now being 61 and buying another because I always I have exhausted what I wanted in the Pontiac world..time to explore Olds.. So understand a lot of us are just trying to learn, much appreciated..

One of the most useful things I learned in school was when a teacher told me that intelligence isn't memorizing facts, it's knowing how to find the right information. I don't have all this stuff memorized (well, maybe some of it...) but I know how to write an effective search string in Google.

I have often thought of creating a "Search" sticky (w/ images even) for the CO site.
The most important aspect for creating a good search is to use the operators AND, OR & NOT - whether it is on this CO site, Google or any other site. I could probably even create such a sticky without having to use the term BOOLEAN.

I always knew someday my early FORTAN IV, ASCII & COBOL might come in handy.
