Installed 6" water pump on 68 Cutlass 350 need suggestions on what pulleys would work to line up alternator and power steering?

 

Maybe it takes the longer
shaft pump. Do the belts need to
move in or out to line up?

 

X2 , the pump on the 455 is longer then the one on the 350 which will throw the belts out of alignment with the pump pulley .

The pump length has NO relationship to the engine size. It is ONLY related to the use of A/C or HD cooling.

To the OP: what pump was on the engine originally? If it wasn't 6", why did you change it?

Bought chrome plated water pump from Summit. They didn't mention, by their own admission, that it was for a motor with AC and they won't take it back. Can't find chrome plated pump with the shorter length dimension. Need to move belts out.

 

Never have had problems with Summit ( and have spent 1000's with them) and returns, call back and escalate it with a supervisor. Especially considering, as you said, " by their own admission".

 

No, you need the water pump pulley from a 1968-72 non-A/C car with HD cooling. Chris Witt can probably help you out or at least supply a part number.

 

Thanks Joe, who is Chris Witt. Looking at a Fusick 3 groove crankshaft pulley # CSP05 2 5/8" tall and a 3 groove water pump pulley WPP07 3 1/2" tall

I returned parts 4 months later with no problems, most of the time they didn't even charge me a re-stocking fee.
Probably cause I spent small fortune there.

 

That is ambiguous. Unclear whether the belts need to move fwd at the bottom or fwd at the top to match other pulleys.

Let's assume that your pulleys lined up before, with the 5.6" WP, and were
KB crank
KG single groove PS, and
KE 399401 2g WP pulley, 7.10 x 2.0" overall

Whereas the HDC/AC setup used a 2g PS pulley and
KC 3-groove crank pulley and
KF 399404 3g WP Pulley, 6.10 x 2.70" overall

Based on the 0.7" or so overall dimension difference, it sounds like a 3 groove set will make your pump usable. If you want to cheap out and can live with a 3g/2groove mismatch, you really only NEEEEED the "KF" stamped water pump pulley.

NOPE - they say it's 5.6 dia x 3.5" wide or long- I believe that's an LD stamped unit.

Belts need to move backward from the Water pump or forward from the crank. Thanks to all for your input. Did recontact Summit and pleaded our case. Failed to mention that we installed the pump a year ago although the engine hasn't been turned over during that period. This has been a slow process. Summit agreed to take back the pump with a 20% restock and, as it turns out, has the right size Chrome pump but with a 4 wk lead time. Yes, we can solve the problem with the right 3 groove set. Thanks for researching availability. I guess 4 more weeks at this point isn't going to make much difference. Just didn't want to go thru installing another pump. got to make a decision. The car is a 68 convertible, 350, 2 barrel with a 3 spd factory installed on the floor. It was originally one of 2 special order vehicles bought by 2 sisters. Have had the engine professionally rebuilt and topped off with Edelbrock valve covers, 4 barrel intake manifold and carburetor and air cleaner and Sanderson short headers. By the way, all the stuff that came off including the 2 barrel carb, air cleaner an intake manifold is available if anyone is interested.

 

Love the '68 convertibles. If the engine bay is anything to go by, yours looks as though it's in great condition.
Pardon me for asking, but if your car is only one of two special order convertibles, wouldn't you want to keep the original parts? if not on the vehicle then at least in the shed?

 

Good question, thought about that. I doubt that I would ever put them back on. They probably would end up in a garage sale or scrap upon my demise. I won't throw them away just for that reason.
