New and creative failure modes

Just when you think you've seen it all...

Been trying to find a slow leak in one tire on the black 85 Delta. Got nowhere with soapy water. I finally pulled the wheel off the car, and purely by accident spilled some soap solution on the backside of the metal wheel.

Actually, I pulled the tire off, cleaned that area on the inside, and there was nothing obvious. Coated it with Permatex Ultra Black (the motorhead's FlexSeal) and letting it dry right now. I wanted to use something flexible rather than JB Weld. I figure this is a good excuse to blast and paint the SSIII wheels for that car...

F me! Metal fatigue?!?!

Edit: I have a slow leak in a trailer tire (that uses a purple SSIII....don't ask) that I should find like that.

That is in the back of my mind. I was a little scared that I didn't see an obvious weld flaw. Unfortunately I don't have a magnaflux machine.

Hell, that's nothing. The other day, I went to change the points in the vert and wondered why it wouldn't start after, only farted.
I ended up having to pull the dist. because the previous owner had it timed with the square peg in the round hole, lol. Took me a minute...

Well, I painted the suspect area inside the rim with Permatex Ultra Black, put the tire back on, and no bubbles so far.

Those are both wacky failures. Maybe POR15 would have been a good thing to use in the wheel, Joe.

I thought about that also, but I've found POR and the like to be a little brittle. That's why I used RTV. I'll be looking for a replacement wheel at Carlisle next week anyway.
