The hoodliner in my 85 olds is falling to pieces, creating alot of dust buildup, if i tear it out is it going to affect the car during the colder seasons? it runs avg 216-18 this summer, Would like that a little lower also, tips?

 

The hood insulation? No. Rip it out.

It's there to make the motor quieter and perhaps to reduce changes in the paint due to heat differentials in different parts of the hood over time.

You can probably get a new one from places like JC Whitney, and maybe even from GM for your model.

What he said. The engine will not care if it is there or not.

For lower temps in summer, in order of operation.

1. Check bugs and crud in radiator fins, clean it up.
2. Check to make sure all air dams and shrouds are functional.
3. Make sure coolant is still good and proper levels.
3.5 Check timing.
4. Make sure radiator cap holds proper pressure, maybe need a pressure tester, or mechanic check.
5. Check to make sure fan clutch works. Fan should spin 1/2 turn when cold when spun by hand.

Then the harder ones.
6. Install high flow thermostat, like a stant superstat, temp setting to preference, I like 160s.
7. Get radiator cleaned out, rodded.
8. Replace/ rebuild water pump.

Find out if you're hot on the road or at idle or both. That temp is not high enough for
drastic changes, yet.

 

The hood blanket is intended muffle noise.

An example in 66 and 67 Olds A body cars in the base f85 models did not receive under hood insulation, only the F85 Deluxe and Cutlass and Supremes were equipped with insulation.

Find a radiator and fan shroud from a 77-79 403 equipped car, and put in a 180 degree thermostat. You should run a lot cooler.

 

Thank you for your information, Im going to remove the hoodliner, and get a new lower temp thermostat, and do some flushing,
