Steering column Swap 68-72

Has anyone used a steering column from a 73-77 A body in a 68-72? I hear that they are about the same length and the splined end is the same. I've been looking, but can't really find a straight answer on this.

You don't happen to have the 73 GP shifter handy do you ?.

I've got a Pontiac shifter here ...

I thought I recall being told it was from a GP .....

But I'm leaning towards the possibility of it being a Firebird/TA piece.
(eBay ones at a quick glance are looking similar)

Would love to see a pic of it ... if that's possible.

The 73-77 columns interchange with the 1969-72 columns with one exception. The arm for the shift/backdrive linkage is different and may require modification of the link rod. Note that 1968 columns do not have a column-mounted ignition switch (but they do interchange with 67).

Mine is a '72, so the ignition won't be a problem. I looked at the arms and there is a slight difference. I think my biggest problem will be figuring out how to connect the linkage with an aftermarket trans mounted shifter. I only paid $75 for the column so even if I have to fab a little with the rod it's worth it. People want so much for the 69-72 columns, its rediculous.

Are you referring to the floor shiter I will be using? I'm using an aftermarket shifter, I'm only using the steering column from the GP.

Yep ...

I was referring to the shifter.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what the GP shifter looks like.

Hey Joe,

If I'm swapping from column to floor shift what happens to the rod that connects from the bottom of the column to the trans? I'm going to use a Lokar shifter mounted to the tail of the trans. Was that rod only used for the gear indicator or is it for steering wheel lock also?

Thanks

Chris

The rod does two things. It locks the shifter with the steering column (a federal requirement) and it operates the neutral safety/backup light switch located at the base of the column. If your aftermarket shifter has the switches and you don't care about locking the shifter, leave it out. Otherwise, you need to reinstall it.

The shifter does have its own neutral safety switch. I need to see a more detailed install so I can determine how I can keep the rod for steering wheel lock
