Steering column Swap 68-72
Steering column Swap 68-72
Has anyone used a steering column from a 73-77 A body in a 68-72? I hear that they are about the same length and the splined end is the same. I've been looking, but can't really find a straight answer on this.
You don't happen to have the 73 GP shifter handy do you ?.
I've got a Pontiac shifter here ...
I thought I recall being told it was from a GP .....
But I'm leaning towards the possibility of it being a Firebird/TA piece.
(eBay ones at a quick glance are looking similar)
Would love to see a pic of it ... if that's possible.

The 73-77 columns interchange with the 1969-72 columns with one exception. The arm for the shift/backdrive linkage is different and may require modification of the link rod. Note that 1968 columns do not have a column-mounted ignition switch (but they do interchange with 67).

If I'm swapping from column to floor shift what happens to the rod that connects from the bottom of the column to the trans? I'm going to use a Lokar shifter mounted to the tail of the trans. Was that rod only used for the gear indicator or is it for steering wheel lock also?
Thanks
Chris
