Steering shaft oil seal.

The steering box on my car has been marking its territory for a while now. It’s time to fix it before spring. My local Napa hasn’t been much help, other than giving me 3 potential part numbers.

NPS 7360
NPS 7205
NOS 12392.

The counter person couldn’t tell me what the differences are. And just to make things even more interesting, the steering gearbox originally came from a 86 442.

I should have known I was going to have trouble when he asked what a 442 was. 🙄

Do these part numbers mean anything to anyone in readerland? If not, anyone have a GOOD part numbers? Thanks.

Is the G-body box a 605 with the round top cover or the old 800-series with the four bolt top cover?

The 605 box uses seal kit P/N 7838143
The 800 box uses seal kit P/N 7286470

These are the GM part numbers that can probably be cross-referenced (by a competent parts guy, anyway).

7286470 tried a few times for a cross. Nobody seemed to recognize the number.

I THINK it has 4 bolts holding the top cover. I’ll try to remember to take a look next time I’m around the car.

If it's off an 86 442, it's an 800 series. It's the same as the 83-88 Monte SS, Regals/GN's with sport suspension, and some GP's with FE2. GM part number 7843135 for the steering gear, coded "YA". It's specific to the mid-80s H/O and 442 for Olds G-bodies. F41 800 box on a Salon or Supreme is NOT the same as the 442 F41 unit. It's basically the tightest turn to turn G-body box from the factory.

GM doesn't supply entire kits for it, but you can still find individual seal kits for them on ebay, etc., etc. I got an entire set of bearings/seals/covers to rebuild my entire box with GM junk. GM still sells some of these part numbers still. Pricey, too.

7832730 is the seal kit for the adjuster plug. (Input shaft by the rag joint).
7817487 is the seal kit for the large end plug in the front and comes with seals and a new lock ring.
7826470 is the pitman shaft seal kit. Joe seemed to fat finger the part number in his previous post.
7817486 is the side cover seal kit and should come with 4 new side cover bolts.

If you want the entire kit, look for Edelmann 8521. Don't waste time trying to dig up a Gates 351290 kit unless you get it cheap. It's just a reboxed Edelmann kit. Rockauto sells them for around 20 bucks with using the 5% discount code.

If you just need the pitman shaft seal kit, then ebay has one. $18.94 plus any sales tax.
