I am looking to replace my steering Box on my 66 442, Mine is sloppy, worn and I'd like a better gear ratio. I read a few threads where the 92-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee gear box is the ideal replacement. In my area, the junkyard prices are high, so a rebuild would be my choice. I'm finding the 92-95 JGC gearbox is different from 96-98, Rockauto shows cardone 27--7525 vs 27-7560 respectively. Does anyone know which unit is the best choice? I'd like to keep my turning radius the same if at all possible.
Also, I have a buddy with a gearbox from a 92 Firebird, 3.5 turns lock-to-lock (Cardone 27-6530). This unit was also used in 1980s GMs such as Olds Cutlass, El Camino, Impala and Monte Carlo. Does anyone have experience using this or similar gearboxes? Wondering if I'd lose turning radius.
This guy has sold a lot of steering boxes on V8Buick.com, as well as other ways. He has good feedback from the buyers on the Buick forum.
I have not bought from him, I sent mine out to be rebuilt with quick ratio upgrade.

Be aware that total turns/ratio is not the only thing that matters. The torsion bar that is part of the input shaft controls the rotary valve that regulates how much hydraulic pressure is applied to the piston in the steering box.
The thicker the bar, the more effort required to twist it and activate the rotary valve, so the greater the steering effort. "One finger" power steering boxes have the smallest torsion bar. High effort boxes have a larger one. You can have a quick ratio box that is still "one finger".
Follow up: I checked the turning radius of my buddy's steering gear box removed from a 92 Firebird (part # 7826692). The radius seemed to be the same as my original so I got the gear box and matching pump. The upgrade was similar to others who upgraded using the JGC steering gear, I needed a new rag joint, new hoses with metric o-ring fittings. The pump would not fit my brackets so I swapped the pressure relief valve and output fitting to upgrade my existing pump. I got it all installed and took it for test drive. The difference in the drive is amazing, with more resistance and responsiveness. I confirmed the turning radius was not effected. For anyone considering the upgrade, there is no need to limit your options to Jeep Grand Cherokee parts, the unit I used is common across many GM models in the 80's and 90's.

Due to the way they are mounted in the car, the F-body box has internal stops that will result in asymmetric turning radii to the right vs to the left. Changing these stops requires complete teardown of the box. The Monte SS box is a better choice, or an aftermarket rebuilt.
