Recommended shocks - 1970 442
Hi all, currently going through a restoration of a 1970 442 and am looking for people’s opinions on recommended replacement shocks. I have picked up UMI 1” lower springs to go with the new suspension, as part of restoration. I cannot find anything for a 442 other than what Rock Auto is selling for generic replacement.
Depends on what performance level you want - 68-72 GM A-body shock choices are pretty varied although I don't know how much (if at all) a lowered stance may affect your options.
Typical performance options include KYB, Bilstein, Koni, Eibach, etc. Also Ridetech makes a really nice adjustable shock set (I have them on my '72 ragtop) if you have a more sizable budget.
Check Summit and Jegs, JC Whitney, Shock Warehouse, etc. and you should see a good selection of options

Thanks 70SGeek. I was looking at the Bilstein 24-131506 and 24-009294, however Bilstein America tech said their products do not fit the 1970 442, which confused me.
I am looking for something that is an improvement over stock and decent ride quality when cruising with the family.
I have been reading that the quality of the KYB line has diminished over the years.

No clue why it might be said Bilsteins wouldn't fit a '70, I thought all 68-72 GM A-body chassis' were functionally the same in that regard.
I've used KYB before, they got soft after about 10k miles. Bilsteins are great but pretty firm and can be too harsh on rough roads for some tastes.
The Koni Street series (orange body color, not the red) shocks are something you might like - they're non-adjustable but generally a good balance between sport firmness and resilience over rough roads. Ridetech adjustables are awesome but pricey - they have I think 12 settings you can pick from relatively floater soft to brick firmness - I set mine in the middle.
Then if you wanted coil-overs, that's probably a whole other discussion - such as QA-1, etc.
Whatever you end up going with, also install a set of urethane end links (Energy Suspension or similar) - they noticeably help to sharpen up your road feel over regular rubber bushing sets.
