Loose steering
Loose steering
My 72 Cutlass Supreme convertible wanders when the road has dips or uneven pavement. On a flat or level road, it drives straight as an arrow. I can take my hands off the wheel and it will continue straight. But it seems like if the road has a few dips, I have to chase the steering to keep it straight. I replaced all the bushings, springs and ball joints when I converted to (factory) front disk brakes. Any thoughts on what I should look at? It almost feels like the steering is on a rubber band. If it gets pulled one way or the other it's rubbery.
is the alignment set to the factory castor setting ? Increasing the caster makes the front wheels just want to go straight, i had my car aligned last year and the guy agreed more caster is better and he dialed in as much as he could get IIRC +2° on each side .
X2 inspect the front suspension and steering components closely before alignment. Worn parts cannot hold the alignment, it will vary/wander constantly as much as there is movement in the worn parts.
Wide tires will increase following/tracking of road imperfections. What width and profile tires are in use?
Good luck!!!
