Recently purchased 70 Cutlass Supreme . Ok Everything I see says they came with 350 /2 barrel. Mine definitely is a four barrel dual exhaust with a 400 automatic. Any thoughts??

 

I think many other engine options were available, but not a TH400 behind a 350 engine, so you need to do more detective work on exact casting ID's and whatnot

 

In 1970 the supreme had the 350 4bbl. as the standard engine. You could opt out for 350 2bbl. for a credit.

And if you went with the SX option you would receive the 455 2bbl. And W32 option 455 4bbl.

Yeah, I think that "everything" that you've been looking at is incorrect. First, the base drivetrain in the 1970 Supreme was the 350 4bbl with three speed column shifted manual. The only automatic factory installed behind the 350 in that car was the TH350. NO 1970 Supremes got a TH400 with a 350 motor from the factory, period. The 350 2bbl was an available option, but not standard equipment. You could also get a 455, and that was the only way to get a factory-installed TH400. Check the VIN-derivative on the engine and trans.

 

Hey Joe what about the Hydramatic 375 ? Wasn't that in a 400 style transmission body?

 

It was, but it was never installed in A-bodies.

I had a 72 VC. It had a 350, with a 375 tran. I thought it was a 400 till I took it out, as it looks like a 400, but has the tail shaft the same size as a 350. Maybe they only used them in VC?

 

Interesting. I was under the impression they were B/C-body 350 only, but it looks like I was mistaken - the '72 SPECS Guide shows TWO columns for the M40 transmission under "Power Teams":
One column for the big blocks, and another for the SB fullsize models and the SB Vista, so it looks like the SB Vista got the TH375 in '72 (though none of the other A-bodies did).

The TH375 was used in the VC behind the small block from at least the 1968 model year. My first car was a 68 VC that my parents bought new (after the 63 D88 wagon got t-boned) and I inherited when I got my license. It had a 350/TH375 drivetrain.

Of course, VC also got the bigger back brakes, bigger rear wheel bearings, fully boxed frame, longer wheelbase, and other changes Chris alludes to based on the intended heavier hauling duties this wagon was supposed to handle. Keep in mind that until 1971, the VC was the top-of-the-line wagon for Olds.
