Hey Guys,

Had the heads recently machined and rebuilt and now I'm bolting them back on the car. Are they side specific or are the driver and passenger side heads interchangeable?

 

Interchangeable, they are identical castings.

Yes I was wondering about that too.

 

350s were made from '68 onward, while the engine number was stamped on the front of the right side head from '67 back, so if it's a 350, he doesn't need to consider assembling it so that the head with the engine number is on the right side.

The 1964-67 motors have the engine unit number stamped on the front end of the passenger side head. Often the heads are inadvertently swapped when a valve job is done and this number ends up on the rear of the driver's side head. There are many threads here where this has come up.

 

So if they got switched would the earth open up or just a lightening strike?

 

No, but that little number stamped into one face of one head is the only conceivable reason why someone might be able to say that the two heads are not identical.

Requiring the use of a Ch*vy distributor of course. And you have to run positive ground so that the starter spins the other way.

Actually, it doesn't. I've got a 1952 Allis Chalmers tractor that was originally 6V positive ground. I changed it to 12V negative ground and didn't need to touch the starter. It DOES spin a lot faster now, however...
