If you are looking to a rebuild to as close to factory specs as possible the best book is the good old, for real, Oldsmobile Shop Manual for your vehicle's year of production.

Personally I'm not to enthused about those "generic" build your this or that make engine books. Just about every production year of a family of engines from any manufacturer exhibits changes of one nature or another, changes one needs to know well before doing a rebuild.

If you are building from a bare block for racing that is a whole other question that really requires a lot of engineering knowledge that won't be found in most books made to sell to wannabe racers. If one expects it to be right when finished study the factory specs and then do the math for any alterations that might seem a good idea. Many times those ideas just don't mathematically prove out.

Heres the deal I have 3 BBO engines 1 425 in my Cutlass now, 1 455 in pieces, with some machining done and one 455 together that I'll put in and cross my fingers. Hope its useable while I rebuild the other 455.
Budget concerns force me to do most myself. I've rebuilt before and done lots of repairs and upgrades I am capable, just new to Olds.

I'll want a healthy street/strip 455 out of the one I rebuild. I am thinking I'll want the best of both worlds, factory manual as well as proven hot rodders "upgrades".

I can study both figure whats best for me and my intended use and pick accordingly.

Little things like ford rear seal, never heard of that till the other day.
Turkey tray(use or not) , oil resricters , and the like are all worth considering.
Just thought maybe someone compiled all that in a book ?
