215 rocker arm shaft bent and cracked
Why would this rocker arm shaft crack right where the mounting bolt goes
through the shaft? The end of the shaft is also bent upwards at the bolt hole. This is on the 215 engine.
Both shafts have cracks at the point where the first shaft bearing mounts
to the head at the front of the engine.
Don't want this to happen again when I replace the shafts.

Reason for crack in rocker shaft
A possible reason for the crack in the shaft at this point is that when
the shaft assembly was placed on the head,the first bolt was started and
then run ALL THE WAY DOWN with an air wrench.The others were then
screwed down tight. This info was provided to me by Mark at D&D
Fabrication who is now rebuilding my rocker assemblies.
To Joe: Oil starvation was a problem with both shafts. Upon removing
the rocker arms I found the lube holes in the shaft were blocked with
crud. The center of the shafts was full of hard packed dirt. Engine was
quite noisy when hot and I believe this is the source of the noise in
the valve train.
