all the cars that i have seen that were "so called survivors" did not have any paint on the hood hinges. i have had 3 low miles original paint cars 68 to 72 since 2000 and none of the hinges were painted on them. as for the % of gloss/flat, i am not sure.

The hood hinges actually had a charcoal gray coating with a sparkle to it.It is called parkerizing. Contact Patton Glade about the correct tints & such for the other items.I just discussed this with him a few months back,as I am in the proccess of restoring another 70 W30 to the exact detail.Every part & piece is getting plated, coated or painted correctly. We just finished the rolling frame,& is now back under the body.

I have seen documents that state core support etc is gloss black. Brian is correct with the hinges, if you use a rattle can of "cast" I hear that looks real close - I know auctions mean nothing but at the last Mecum auction I saw a lot of hinges painted aluminum or cast and they looked good. Many were black as well and "looked" fine but it was clear the better detailed cars had the parkerizing look Brian mentions

"This thread is worthless without documentation."
My '71's core support was semi-gloss/60 degree gloss black, built in Lansing. The original core support I bought was the same. The Inline Tube '70 W-31 is a Lansing car and the core support is semi-gloss. Go to the Inline Tube site and check out the resto, shows and explains all that stuff, very nice car.

The 100 percent gloss core supports and top plates always look wrong, they were just a little glossy, not much depth to the finish with no metal prep or primer and dipped in a tank of paint.
I changed the oil on a lot of GM cars back then, just can't remember seeing super glossy core supports, but then again it was the 70's.
The best thing to do with hood hinges besides having them treated over again is to sandblast then spray them with a dry clear, cut down the air pressure or hold the spraycan away. Blasting does bring those "sparkles" out in the steel and looks way better than painting them.
