Modified Air cleaner question

Modified Air cleaner question
Got my Cutlass S home and am in the process of going over it. I found the air cleaner had a hole cut in it on the back side facing the distributor. Why would someone do this? Also, there were zero vacuum hoses hooked up. The air cleaner sits on a Q-Jet 2 barrel.

if someone had an HEI distributor on it they would have had to cut that out to fit.
