Hey i’m having some problems with my car. It starts up fine but when it’s cold it lopes for a little like it has a cam but then it’ll go to regular idle, also i’ve lost a little voltage a couple times but it never stalled on me. I’ve bought an alternator for the power issue and i’m thinking one of my vacuum hoses might be leaking for my cold start issue. Has anybody on here had these problems before. 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 w/ 307 135k mi

 

Sounds like the cold idle speed may need to be adjusted, the choke pulloff may be starting to fail or need adjustment. I encourage you to get a factory manual, read it and understand it before making any adjustments especially to the carburetor. That car has A TON of vacuum hoses, inspect them closely for leaks or better yet start replacing them.

 

You can have the current alternator tested at the auto parts store. If you have a vacuum leak or improperly set choke the poor idle can indicate a failing alternator even when it's good.

 

Your 307 uses the computer controlled Qjet and distributor. You MUST adjust it following the instructions in the Chassis Service Manual EXACTLY. Also, any leaking or mis-connected vacuum lines will cause the system to go apoplectic. You cannot simply tune this carb with a vacuum gauge.

 

Start with the fast idle speed, choke setting and vacuum pull off. About all you can do, as well as replace rotten vacuum hoses on a CCC Qjet.

 

That is far from "all you can do" with a CCC carb.

Do you know his skill level or his specialized tools on hand?

 

I had no experience with the CCC system nor the specialized tools the first time I tuned one. A dwell meter is all you need to monitor mixture control solenoid duty cycle while adjusting the mixture screws, as detailed in the CSM.

 

He doesn't know how to set a choke, you want him to diagnose a CCC carb?
