Carb Idle Issues
Carb Idle Issues
Got the rocket 350 put back together. Fired up fine and sounds great. When I put it in gear it bogs out. Took it for a drive down the road and runs great. When I slow down to turn or come to a complete stop it bogs itself out. I put a cam in it with lifters, redid the heads. I have a stock quadrajet on it now. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem. Thanks.
I’ll have to check what the time is set at. The vacuum was reading right where it should. I wonder if it has something to do with the timing. Can I rule out the carb or should I try to put on another carb?
Data. Engine trans gears cam profile et al....
You changed things so other things need to change....carb A/F and timing.
You're tossing a hot dog down a hallway without data.
Post your warm idle vacuum reading (from an intake port) idle RPM, timing with and without the vacuum advance for starters.
Carb number? Rebuilt?

As said we need more info. If the timing, dwell if you still have points and the rest of ignition is good, look at the carb. Your Qjet was perfect for your STOCK 350. You increased the duration and lowered vacuum some. I find a 750 rpm in park, way too low, I like around 1000 rpm. Set the mixture screws to the highest rpm and vacuum reading. Your carb may need passages enlarged with the idle circuits to idle correctly but eliminate everything else before going down that road, including vacuum leaks.
Tired three different quadrajet carbs. Car would run fine then once you put it in gear so the same thing bog out. My mechanic has a Holley he put on and it would idle so he set the vacuum and timing properly and it runs very good now. Problem is he doesn't want to sell the Holley. He has an Edelbrok 1406 he's going to try out to see how it runs.
Make sure it runs right with the Edelbrock carb in every way. The factory carbs are very limited on idle fuel for a bigger cam, the later the carb, the worse it is. What cam did you go with?
As asked many times already, what distributor, initial timing setting, amount of vacuum, etc?
The reason for asking is my engine had similar issue at idle with the 217/221 cam that I cured by increasing the initial timing from the factory 10º setting to 18º. The idle vacuum increased from a bouncy 14-15" to a steady 16".
To me that says it's not an issue with the carb.

Isn't the 1405 richer calibrated vs 1406? Unless your heads were milled you are still under 9 to 1 compression. Are you still running the stock 1600 stall converter? That 218/218 cam will want 2000+ and too tight a converter can cause stalling issues. Yes, the timing needs to be known, more may be needed as said.
