330 Build Advice

Any tips for a good 330 build.
1964 330 bored .030 over, egge 9-1 pistons wishing I would have got the 9.5-1 as it looks like compression will only be 7.8 until I zero deck the block then it will be 8.5. I'm using 72 7a heads. got these so I could use an adjustable valve train. although this is killing my compression as they are 68cc heads. Block has been chamfered and cast flash smoothed out same as the heads. rods are resized and the crank is ground .010. I bought the car knowing it had a spun bearing. opened up the lifter galley oil return holes to 7/16. not sure ifi should do the same to any passages on the heads. mondello 18-20 cam. edelbrock 2711. not sure on the carb yet.

If you are going adjustable for the valve train, mill the heads to 60cc, that will help a lot to bring back compression. You can also run the Rocket Racing .028" head gaskets so you don't have to deck the block as much as well. Throw 2"/ 1.625" valves in with the bowls opened up and there you go.

Ya, gonna have to cut those heads down a bit and get some .011 head gaskets from Smitty.... I have a set of #3's with 2.07/1.68 valves... They also have studded valve train so the 3/8 bolt hole is already there for the rocker arm stud...

I'm not sure what your budget might be but, you can bore to 4.000" and use a light Chevy STD 350 piston...Probe if you can find them or SRP, light H-Beam Chevy small journal rod, Or a SCAT I-beam...good rods, have the crank offset ground to 3.5 if there is enough material, you can then internal balance the assembly with a bobweight somewhere in the mid to low upper-1600's if I remember. I have my balance/machine work card somewhere, just not readily available for a similar build done a few years ago. 2.000" intake and 1.625 exhaust valves will help it breathe well and PM Mark - cutlassefi for your cam kit needs, very knowledgable and has a tremendous amount of experience helping Oldsmobile run well. 351 CI the hard way 330's are great little motors and they do like to rev. Good luck with your build.

Wait...it sounds like he already has the pistons n' such. If not, since it's already not numbers matching...just toss that crank and rods into a 350 block...? Hope it doesn't have the 45 degree cam bank angle....

Yes I have all the parts minus head gaskets. I was looking at a set of cosmetic. 027 head gadgets but they run 90$each.

Smitty has .011 that I think will work just fine, they're $110 plus shipping depending on where you live. Also, multi layer steel, so they're reusable.

I can't speak for pricing on a 330, sorry for assuming, but probably not gonna be $90 per gasket...
