I know both my '68 455 10.25:1 motors needed special high-torque starters that the auto parts store couldn't get (and the little torque bracket that holds the tail end of the starter to the block, just like a diesel), but I can't say with any certainty what was supposed to be on a 425.

Won't hot start.
Make sure that your battery ground cable is on good. No paint under it and it is tight with a good connection.
You should to check to see if the engine ground strap from the back of the head to the firewall was reinstalled when the engine was put back in place.
Your engine needs a good ground to the chassis as well as one to the battery. If it is not there, make an engine to frame ground strap. That should help.
Make sure that your ignition timing is not to far advanced, that will cause one to drag/turn slowly or kick back.
Good Luck,
Brian

Run the ground cable directly to the engine block. install a strap from the block to the body of the car and a strap from the body to the car frame. I did that on my 10.5.1 455 and I use the stock starter and it spins the engine just fine even in hot weather when the engine is running at 180. The factories never did that good a job at grounding. Use #6 gauge cable Minimum. Just my two cents.
