The 30 rule is good, and I stay with that on most builds. And other factors, such as main air bleeds and such.

Olds were set up very lean. This carb came from factory with 69 jets and 50B rods. 73 and 46 is a good bit richer than original, but I like to use what works well.

Thanks for saying what I have said here on numerous threads. Seems there is a lot of closed thinking the almighty olds factory tune by the book should always be followed but most wont realize or accept that those lean combos are strictly meant for 195 degree t stats , restrictive closed single snorkel hot air intake and as soon as you put that open 14" dude on you are already in need of recalibration even on a stock engine. Then add headers, alum intake, cooler thermostats and it is all the more critical to fix. 72/42 is a good base for this guy

I'm currently running an edelbrock 1405 carb, and it's getting up 12% rich in both power and cruise mode to get it to run "good". It still lacks responsiveness. I'm tempted to air on the side of rich with the Q-Jet, given this.

Also going around a hard corner and hitting the gas creates a small hesitation. That, and the fuel percolation, make me want to get rid of the edelbrock and try something else.

So could I get the 73 and 46's with the basic kit if I request it through the order page on the site?

You can buy individual sets of jets and early style primary rods on Summit or Jegs under Edelbrock for the quadrajet carbs. Like a set of 72 jets and 44 rods Do a new float and a larger ID high flow needle and seat (Edelbrock)

Your 1405 carb issues I have seen others with before too. They generally suck all the way around to be honest and proper tune 750 qjet will blow it away

yes, you can specify jets and I would send them.
My new jets are $7.99 if you order some separate, and I have all the variety of jets and rods that are available. Free shipping over $25.

Glad to help any way I can.
