Going to go to a electronic ign set up. What is a good brand distributor to use? I want to use one with a black cap so it looks somewhat orig.

I have had good luck with the Pertronix Flamethrower HEI, stay away from the el-cheapo E-Bay crap. Also, not sure what year the vehicle is, (74 was HEI) but you can convert a points distributor and keep it stock looking if you have an older car.

I use to have a 74 Cutlass Supreme that originally came with a points distributor and no catalytic converter.

Yeah, I was mistaken, that was right around when they switched over. Again, if you want to keep it stock looking, convert the points dist to electronic and keep the external coil. Otherwise, drop in an HEI

Go with Pertronix. The regular one is ok unless you re doing some racing.

As noted, 1974 was the first year that HEI was offered on Oldsmobiles. It was an option, but only on 455 engines.
