rocker bridges - 1967 330

I was speaking with an old salty mechanic this afternoon regarding my tapping 1967 330. He suggested that it was the bridges on the rocker arms. Does that sound plausible or does anyone have any experience with that part failing?

Those are definitely a weak link. Melling makes steel replacements so you can get rid of your aluminum ones.

To clarify...... they are a 3 piece unit as opposed to the stock 1 piece aluminum units that came stock. They have 2 aluminum fulcrums with a steel bridge for support.

The Melling replacements are 3 piece units, is that what you mean?

My engine still has the one-piece units in place.

I think it is a bad lifter. The engine probable has a lot of sludge. Run a quart of ATF fluid in the engine. The tick should go away. If the rocker bridge is broke the engine will have a miss to it. The engine is 43 years old, the lifter is proabale wore out.

Do most people replace the 1 piece units with those Melling units, and how much trouble is that?

The one piece units are not available any more so the answer is yes. I used them in a rebuild 17 years ago and they function just fine.

This Melling part is the replacement, right?

I did that last oil chance - 20/50 replacing a quart with ATF - about 1300 miles so far, no change; I even dumped other "miracle" type stuff (mostly ether, I believe) into the crank case - no change yet.

Don't 330's have rocker setups like this or is that just the older ones??? At least my brother inlaws did. His was noisey above 2000RPM. We found a few of the rocker bolts loose. Once we tightened them up the noise went away.

Those must be older - like these replacements:

I just replaced these on my 425. I ended up with a mix of both styles. Gotta say I liked the fit & finish of the new 3 piece units MUCH better.
