Removing engine/trans with alum intake manifold?

Removing engine/trans with alum intake manifold?

I am going to remove my 350 engine/trans soon, but it still has an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold. Is it safe to put a carb plate on and lift everything out by that way?

The last time I removed the engine/trans as a combo, I never had that carb plate, and just mounted to the heads.

With an aluminum intake, I mount your cherry picker chains to the heads with grade 8 bolts.

Only seen it on T.V. - don't know anyone who's done it, or had a breakage problem, [which would be MUCHO EXPENSIVE] but I've too much respect for Murphy and his Law!!

X4. I've stripped enough carb mounting bolts on aluminum intakes just installing the carb to be worried about lifting plates. Why take the chance?

I feel that way also. I don't want to ruin the Edelbrock RPM intake (although that would be the least of the worries if the engine fell). Since I stupidly scrapped my stock intake long ago, I will have to use the heads for now. I will have to put an ad up also b/c I need a decent stock intake anyway.

Another related question... I have Hooker headers and the pass. side will not slide out (it is completely unbolted), as it keeps hitting the oil filter. I put these headers on about 20 years ago, and can't remember how I put them on. Does the oil filter need to be removed? I also have that huge A/C thing on the firewall. The pass. side header is the only thing left that seems in the way of removing the engine/trans.

On every A-body Olds I've ever put headers into, the oil filter AND the adapter need to come off. Three bolts hold the adapter to the block.

Can't I just pull the engine, and wiggle the header out along with it?

Yes you can pull the engine and work the header out. It is a pain in the *ss to pull both the engine and trans. I would suggest you do the engine by itself and then drop the trans. Makes less of a mess on the floor.
