Random rocker tick - comp roller tip rockers

Random rocker tick. I've adjusted em cold, adjusted running. Ive run my stethoscope everywhere... put it on the top of each stud... no indication of which one...

See anything out of order? Usually rattles for a few seconds on a cold start. Sometimes rattles for the whole drive. Sometimes quiet as a mouse.

73 350 #7 heads mild cam. Pushrods that came with the kit. 8.5 i think.

I'll make a cold start one tomorrow morning

What Kit?
What thickness head gaskets were used?
How did you break it in?
They all sound like they're clattering.
Explain how you're setting the rocker lash?

Pull a few of those rockers and look at the roller to valve stem witness marks.
Does it have enough miles to produce witness marks?
The rollers should be somewhat centered on the stem face if all the stack up tolerances are right.
If not the push rod and or the valve stem height is off.

Wiggle a few of the rockers that are off the cam lobe ramps and on the base circle in the next video.
Like to see how loose they are.
You are pumping quite a bit of oil too.

I doubt that it is the rockers actually causing the noise. There is not much in a rocker arm to make it come and go like that. Almost certainly the lifters for some reason.

Also, your video is too dark to tell for sure but are there guide plates on the head ?

Well, first of all.. I'm dumb..
2nd of all... it's an exhaust leak. I just saw puffs of exhaust shooting up at #6/8. In perfect rhythm with the ticking.

I wondered why, when I'd watch the valves, nothing seemed to be ending its stroke in time with the sound. Duh

I was reluctant to rev it before because oil shoots every where. This time i gave it a few good revs and saw smoke

However, I did the scotch tape on the valve stems trick and verified the rollers are decently centered . So peace of mind there. If there were 50 thou longer pushrods I'd probably get it perfect. It's very close.

Dont beat yourself up, you are certainly not the first person fooled by an exhaust leak ! At least now you know what you have to do

Lol. Doesn't look fun. I'm perplexed as I used a felpro gasket (factory had none) and bolts are all tight. Oh well... its definitely shooting up from that seam. Can feel the heat there.

I prefer to put them back like the factory without a gasket. But the surfaces have to be in pretty decent shape to do that. Thats what I did when I did the 307 in my Wife's car and it has been good for around 4 years now.

What I have always heard is that when you put a gasket on it keeps the heat from the manifolds from being absorbed by the engine block and cooling system. That means the manifolds are running a lot hotter than normal and expand and contract a lot more.

Glad it was simple. Sure sounded like clatter in the vid. As Bill said your not the first to be skunked by an exhaust leak.

Run a large/long file over the exhaust manifold to knock down high spots. I have had success using the gaskets and file.
Dont forget liberal coatings of copper anti-seize on all fasteners. Re-torque after a few heat cycles..
